Color Trends for 2005

Forecasting color is a lot like forecasting the weather. But instead of predicting today's temperature or tomorrow's cloud cover, color trends are forecast two to three years out. While it's not a precise science, experts look at a number of indicators - everything from fashion to social environments.

So what are forecasters currently predicting for the future of color?

The Color Marketing Group and The Color Association of America both expect a brightening palette of colors over the next few years. This might reflect a drive for optimism, in spite of a sluggish economy and national security worries. Forecasts predict a strong showing of hot pink and shades ranging from orange to red.

Blue's dominance is beginning to wane, although this perennial favorite is unlikely to disappear. Instead, blues will become more pale and clear. (Think ocean and sky.) Greens, too, will lighten and brighten.

A desire for comfort and safety has resulted in the return of a series of neutral shades ranging from very light to nearly black. From deep, rich brown to warm grey and natural khaki, people crave calming shades. A very pale shade of peach pairs nicely with deep muted red, violet and blue.

Color trends should inform your style, but never dictate it. Using out-of-the-ordinary color combinations can produce extraordinary results, whatever your project. Since colors have meanings, use rich, deeper or neutral colors to indicate sophistication or tradition. Use lighter brighter color to project youth, fun and adventure.

Using “complements” (colors opposite from each other on the color wheel) is a smart way of ensuring the colors you choose will look good together. Explore the nearly limitless combinations of colors and hues until you make the right personal statement.

Business Trends for 2005

Experts are predicting almost as many trends for small businesses in the coming year as there are types of business. Here are a few we think are worth your attention:

Anti-trending: Watch for companies to do what seems to be contrary to expectations, such as fast food restaurants returning to larger portions even as obesity issues remain in the news. Health: People will continue to try new diets and exercise regimens in their battles against the bulge, while price and safety concerns about prescription drugs will lead many to try more preventative and nontraditional treatments. Customized service: Want to stand out in the crowd? Offer more personalized services and custom options. Smart businesses will get ahead by making life easier and more full service for their customers.

Merging technologies: After years of emerging technologies, look for product and service providers to package their offerings for all-in-one consumer convenience. Digital cameras on cell phones are just the beginning.

Home office comfort: With more small business based out of the home than ever before, more home office furniture will feature the comfort we expect when relaxing in front of the television.

Capitalizing on current trends can make a big impact on your small business. It might make your daily operations easier or possibly increase your bottom line.
